Greg Alfus made an impact on thousands of students during the 32 years he taught composition and literature at MCC. When Greg passed away in June of 2020, his wife, Carol Alfus, decided to honor his memory by establishing the Greg Alfus Memorial Scholarship.
Liz Angeles will be starting her second year at Lake Forest College in the fall. But before she was a student at the four-year school, she got her start learning some crucial skills at MCC.
I value the power of education, and I believe everyone is entitled to pursue a higher education—no matter their social status. I want to inspire and motivate students by guiding them with my personal experience.
MCC alum Virginia Brightwell wanted to establish a scholarship in honor of her mother, Hazel May St. Clair. “It’s important to me to give back because I was helped by so many scholarships. And I don’t want what happened to my mom to happen to anyone else.”
I always say there are two things you can control—your attitude and your effort. I encourage my students to be self-advocates, to prioritize self-care, work on self-confidence, and take selfies (just because they’re fun!).
