Applying for financial aid for college starts with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the application that determines your eligibility for federal and state student grants, work-study, and loan programs.

Essential information needed to complete your FAFSA

Complete the 2023-2024 FAFSA if you’re attending in Spring 2024 or Summer 2024

  • Create an FSA ID. One parent must create an FSA ID if you are a dependent student.
  • Your Social Security Number (SSN) (you must enter it correctly on the FAFSA form!)
  • Your parents’ SSNs if you are a dependent student
  • Your driver’s license number if you have one
  • Your A-number if you are not a U.S. citizen
  • 2021 federal tax information, tax documents, or tax returns, including IRS W-2 information, for you (and your spouse, if you are married), and for your parents if you are a dependent student
  • Records of your (and, if you’re a dependent student, your parents') untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans noneducation benefits
  • Information on cash; savings and checking account balances; investments, including stocks, bonds, and real estate (but not including the home in which you live); and business and farm assets for you and your parents if you are a dependent student

Complete the 2024-2025 FAFSA if you plan to attend in Fall 2024, Spring 2025, or Summer 2025

  • Create an FSA ID. Every contributor—you, your spouse, a biological or adoptive parent, or your parent's spouse who's required to provide information on the FAFSA form—needs one before accessing and completing their section of the online form. Note: Contributors without an SSN can create a StudentAid.gov account to fill out their portion of the 2024–25 FAFSA form online.
  • Your parents’ SSNs if you’re a dependent student
  • 2022 Tax returns
  • 2022 W2(s)
  • Records of child support received
  • Current balances of cash, savings, and checking accounts
  • Net worth of investments, businesses, and farm
