artspace144 Art Installation Projects
Calling All MCC Students: Transform artspace144!
Submit your proposal for a site-specific installation at artspace144 (located next to the art office, A144). Whether you are enrolled in a credit or non-credit course, you can pitch ideas for solo, two-person, or group exhibits. We want you to venture beyond traditional displays and treat the gallery itself as part of your art.
You can use 2D or 3D media, sound, video, projection, light, or performance. We encourage you to experiment and collaborate with both art and non-art students. If we select your project, it will run for 1–3 weeks, and you can add the experience to your professional portfolio and resume.
Criteria
To participate, you must:
- Identify Your Team: List names and contact information for everyone involved.
- Conduct Research: Research an installation artist and write a brief paragraph about their work or influence on your project.
- Write a Proposal: Include your artist statement, concept, materials, equipment, sketches, and a floor plan. (Ask us for a dimensioned diagram of artspace144!)
- Coordinate: Meet with the gallery curator to plan and revise your project.
- Display and Safety: Include your artist statement and signage. Install your work safely—no live flames, use timers for lights, and keep sound at an acceptable volume.
- Document: Take photos or video of the finished project and submit them to the curator.
- Maintain the Space: Install and uninstall your work on schedule. You must repair, spackle, paint, and clean the gallery to return it to its original state.
Need Inspiration?
If you need a starting point, try these steps:
- Search "installation art" online for visuals.
- Visit Art21.org to watch free films and educational materials.
- Consult an MCC librarian to find books like Ann Hamilton, Blurring the Boundaries: Installation Art 1969-1996, or Understanding Installation Art: From Duchamp to Holzer.
The gallery curator and your instructors are available to offer assistance, suggestions, and critiques throughout the process.
