Yadira Placencia’s Journey to Sonography and Scholarship Success
For Yadira Placencia, education has always been about building a strong foundation for the future.
After graduating from McHenry County College in 2024 with her Associate of Science, Yadira decided to return to MCC to complete the prerequisites for her dream sonography program.
“I wanted to gain knowledge and skills for my future career,” she said.
That motivation is deeply rooted in her family’s story.
“My parents immigrated to the U.S. to provide a better life for my sister and me,” she said, noting that their sacrifices motivated her to keep pushing forward. She also credits her experience in Rising Scholars (formerly known as Upward Bound) during high school as an important influence that helped her believe in herself and pursue college.
As she continued her journey at MCC, Yadira took an important step by applying for scholarships—even earning the High-Impact Presidential Scholarship.
“I’m really proud that I applied for and received the Presidential Scholarship,” she said.
Throughout her time at MCC, Yadira has felt consistently supported. “The staff truly care about their students and want to see them succeed,” she shared. “They’re always willing to help and go above and beyond.”
Along the way, Yadira has grown not only academically, but also personally. One skill she’s especially proud of gaining is stepping outside her comfort zone.
“Getting out of my shell and trying new things has helped me grow so much,” she said.
Her advice to students considering MCC is to “apply today.”
“MCC is a great institution with so many opportunities to advance in both personal development and career growth.”
