McHenry County College (MCC) and Northern Illinois University (NIU) are building on their partnership to create a new registered nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) pathway that will give local nurses an opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree through the University Center at MCC.
The program is designed for MCC nursing graduates who have completed an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing, as well as registered nurses already working in the field. MCC nursing graduates who meet NIU’s standard admission requirements will be guaranteed admission to the RN to BSN program. The established pathway also helps simplify the transfer process and ensures students can apply eligible MCC coursework toward their bachelor’s degree.
“Expanding our partnership with NIU to include the RN to BSN pathway creates a seamless opportunity for alumni and local nurses to continue their education close to home, while balancing the demands of work and family,” said Kailley Harmon, Executive Director of the University Center at MCC. “By increasing access to bachelor’s degree completion, we are not only supporting our students’ professional growth, but also helping to strengthen the healthcare workforce throughout our community.”
Once admitted to NIU’s program, students can complete their bachelor’s degree fully online in as little as two to three semesters, depending on how they choose to attend. The flexible format allows students to continue working while completing their degree. Students who need to complete any remaining general education requirements can also do so while beginning their bachelor’s coursework.
“Northern Illinois University is proud to strengthen our partnership with McHenry County College through this new pathway,” NIU Executive Vice President and Provost Laurie Elish-Piper said. “By providing a clear and affordable route to completing a bachelor’s degree, we are expanding opportunities for nurses to advance their education, grow professionally and continue making a meaningful difference in the communities they serve.”
Financial support may also be available to students continuing their education through the University Center. Students can apply for scholarships while attending MCC and may also be eligible for scholarship opportunities after transferring to one of MCC’s university partners.
