MCC Art Gallery to Feature Photographs by Lawrence Agyei

McHenry County College (MCC) will be featuring A Journey, an exhibit by Lawrence Agyei, now through April 12 in Galleries One and Two, located inside and outside the library respectively.

A Journey is a celebration of Agyei’s work over the past few years, from his beginnings as a photographer in Chicago to capturing moments in Ghana and throughout Europe. The collection is a blend of documentary and portraiture. A Journey is meant to be a celebration.

Agyei is a Chicago-based visual storyteller who draws inspiration from his cross-continental upbringing. His work is influenced by his multifaceted identity as a third-culture child, and touches upon notions of multiculturalism as a way to celebrate the juxtaposition between his Ghanaian heritage, Italian background, and life in the American Midwest.

Focusing on enhancing Black culture and the beauty of its people as a whole, he blends the lexicon of documentary photography with portraiture while taking cues from fashion.

Agyei has worked with companies and publications such as Apple, Nordstrom, Teen Vogue, Adobe, Vanity Fair, Studio Magazine, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Google, and many other publications and brands. His work has toured internationally in the exhibition The New Black Vanguard, curated by Antwaun Sargent.

There will be an artist talk with Agyei on Wednesday, March 13 at 2:30 p.m. in the MCC Conference Center (A213). A reception will follow in Gallery One (A212x) at 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
