2nd Ride for Student Success Raises $3,500

The second annual Ride for Student Success, a fundraiser to support the Friends of MCC Foundation, recently raised $3,500 for student scholarships at McHenry County College. The ride was organized by MCC employee Russ Shafer and his motorcycle club, Iron Seven.

“We received excellent feedback from last year’s event and were able to help a few students pursue their dreams through the scholarship funds raised that day,” said Shafer. “This year, we wanted to help even more students achieve their goals.”

Nearly 100 people took off for the ride from Hoops in Hebron on August 12 at just after 10 a.m. Trucks and cars were also welcome. Stops included Whiskey Ranch in Delavan, WI; Stumble Inn in Capron, IL; Niko’s Grill and Pub in Marengo; and Ortmann’s in Woodstock. Food and drink specials were offered at every stop, and a live band performed at Ortmann’s at the end of the ride.

“Organizations in the community generously gave back in the form of donated gift cards or gift baskets at each stop,” said Shafer. “We held more than 20 raffles throughout the event.”

In total, the event raised $3,500 and funded seven scholarships of $500 each for both the College’s Motorcycle Technician Training program and Art program.

“We’re extremely grateful to Russ and Iron Seven for their hard work in putting together this event, and for the generosity of all the local businesses involved,” said Brian DiBona, executive director of the Friends of MCC Foundation. “This was one of my favorite fundraising events last year, and I was very happy we were able to do it again. It was a beautiful day to spend time with great people while raising funds for students in our community.”

Shafer said the group plans to hold the event again next year.
