About AAS in Health Information Management

Health Information Management is a unique profession that combines facets of medicine, data management, and information technology, in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and security of patient data. HIM professionals work in a variety of settings throughout the healthcare industry, including hospitals, physician offices and clinics, long-term care facilities, insurance companies, government agencies, and home care providers.

MCC's AAS in Health Information Management is a 60 credit-hour-degree program that prepares you for a career in health information management where you will:

  • electronically assemble and track patients' health information
  • analyze electronic data to improve healthcare information
  • maintain and validate data for clinical databases and registries
  • use classification software to assign clinical codes for reimbursement and data analysis

MCC offers a 28-credit-hour Medical Billing and Coding Certificate program that prepares you to facilitate the processing of medical insurance claims. You can apply all credits from your Medical Billing and Coding Certificate towards your AAS degree. Complete the certificate in two semesters then continue coursework toward the completion of the AAS in Health Information Management, or work for some time and then return to complete the degree.
