Explore the Science Behind Natural Dyes at MCC August 1

Join the Liebman Institute for Science Innovation (LISI) at McHenry County College (MCC) for "Natural Dyes: The Science of Color" on Saturday, August 1, from 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. in the Liebman Science Center (Building F) at the MCC campus, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14, Crystal Lake.

As artificial dyes are phased out of products ranging from candy and school lunches to laundry detergents, this interactive program explores the science behind color and the growing interest in natural alternatives. Participants will discover the differences between laboratory-made and natural dyes while examining the science behind the FDA initiative to phase out artificial dyes.

Looking ahead, attendees will learn how engineers and biologists are partnering to grow vibrant colors directly into foods and fabrics using specialized living bacteria, reducing the need for traditional chemical dye baths.

Participants will also have the chance to create their own silk gift-wrapping cloths using local leaves, flowers, and mushrooms and take home their finished projects.

The event is open to ages 14 and older. Participants ages 14–18 must attend with an adult.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors ages 65 and older and youth ages 14–18. Space is limited, and registration is required.
