Discover New Skills This Spring with Community Enrichment Classes

McHenry County College (MCC) invites the community to explore a new lineup of personal development programs for spring 2026. From April through June, MCC’s Community Enrichment classes offer opportunities for people of all ages to learn new skills, pursue creative projects, and participate in hands-on experiences.

Some of the upcoming classes include “Mushroom Mission,” “Candle Making Creations,” “Custom Wood Creations,” “Beginners Metal Art,” “Korean Culture and Lotus Flower Lantern Workshop,” wine tasting classes, and more.

Explore the fascinating world of mushrooms with “Mushroom Mission,” a two-session workshop held April 30 and May 2. The first session is an indoor lecture where local experts will share knowledge about mushroom varieties, their habitats, and how to identify edible species. Participants can choose to attend just the lecture or join the second session outdoors for a hands-on mushroom hunt at a McHenry County location.

Wine enthusiasts can deepen their appreciation of fine wines with two spring classes. “The Wine 411: Discover. Taste. Experience.” on April 17 teaches the science of flavor perception and how to isolate complex tastes. Participants will enjoy guided wine tastings with light food pairings. On May 14, “Meritage and Red Blend Wines” lets attendees step into the role of a winemaker, blending red varietals to create their own signature bottles. Both classes are for ages 21 and older.

For those interested in hands-on metalwork, “Beginners Metal Art” runs Saturdays, April 18 through May 9. Participants will learn the basics of welding to create two take-home art projects: a decorative phone holder and a metal flower.

Explore Korean culture with the “Korean Culture and Lotus Flower Lantern Workshop” on April 29. Participants will view a short documentary, learn about Korean traditions, and craft a colorful lotus flower lantern from paper and wire. All materials are provided.

Creative minds can also explore “Candle Making Creations,” led by Riverside Candle Shop, where participants will design themed candles in three sessions: April 8 (cinnamon roll candle jar), May 13 (cupcake-shaped candle), and June 10 (lavender blends). In “Custom Wood Creations” at Mimi’s Designs & Creations, attendees will select a design, paint wooden pieces, and assemble a themed snow globe, with sessions on April 9 (springtime globe), May 7 (flowers globe), and June 11 (summertime globe).

Additional offerings include language classes in French, Spanish, and American Sign Language (ASL), as well as specialty courses in podcasting, digital photography, playing blackjack, and more.

Registration is also open for more than 125 Kids and College Summer classes, running June 1 – August 7.
