McHenry County College Offers Winetasting Event April 5

Do you know the chemistry behind the flavor and effects of wine? Join the Liebman Institute for Science Innovation (LISI) at McHenry County College (MCC) for “Winetasting: Flavors and Red Blends” on Friday, April 5 from 6 – 9 p.m. at the College, 8900 US Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

The class will be led by Andy Andresky, restaurateur, wine connoisseur, and sommelier. It will explore the aromas and taste sensations of three red wines and one white wine.

Attendees will learn the chemistry behind flavor, including the sometimes bold, sometimes nuanced effects of tannins, pH, fermentation, aging, and grape varietals. The course will answer questions about unique tasting notes, what causes mouthfeel, and which chemicals make wine velvety, silky, or grippy.

Participants will then test and challenge their senses with the aromas, overtones, weight, texture, and structure of Andy’s hand-picked wines, eventually blending their own unique vintage to bring to the Connoisseur’s Table for judging. The experience includes epicurean delights to further enhance and ignite taste buds and olfactory receptors.
Registration is required and costs $50 per person or $80 for a couple. Each session is limited to 32 participants for maximum immersion, so early registration is encouraged.

The event is the second in LISI’s “The Science Behind It” series, which offers observation, discovery, and immersion into some of the most cutting-edge science topics. As part of the series, participants will have an opportunity to hear from widely acclaimed experts in their fields across a variety of topics.

Upcoming events include “Winetasting: Chards and Charcuterie” May 17 and the first LISI Lecture Series “Time: Behind and Beyond the Clock” on April 26.
