MCC Tartan Student Writers Win Awards at Statewide Conference

Three writers for the McHenry County College (MCC) monthly student newspaper, The Tartan, recently received state awards at the Annual Spring Conference of the Illinois Community College Journalism Association.

Lyn Guanci (Spring Grove) won first place in news column writing for a story that examined the effects of the Netflix series Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story. A story about recent Florida education bills written by Lauren Kolodziej (Crystal Lake) earned second place in the news stories category. Finally, Bryce Beitzel (Spring Grove) earned a fourth-place award for sports features for his update of the Scots’ baseball team.

“I’m proud to work with such talented and hardworking students,” said Toni Countryman, MCC English and Journalism instructor and advisor to The Tartan. “They are passionate about writing and the important role journalism plays in our world.”

There were 321 entries from 15 schools across the state. The awards were presented at the conference in April at the College of DuPage.
