McHenry County College Recognizes Winter 2022 Graduates in Commencement Ceremony

McHenry County College (MCC) recognized 394 graduates at its Winter Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, December 10 in the College’s gymnasium, 8900 US Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

Of this group of graduates, 81 earned honors or high honors with a GPA of 3.50 or greater. The students represented 62 different programs, with Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, AAS in Occupational Therapist Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician Certificate, and Basic Nursing Assistant producing the most graduates.

“Each of these students have displayed an inspiring tenacity and will to succeed,” said MCC President Dr. Clint Gabbard. “They have distinguished themselves as individuals who finish what they start; people who succeed. Whatever they do next, whatever they decide to take on, we know that they are capable and ready to make our community a better place. We’re proud to call these students graduates of MCC.”

The ceremony included an academic procession of graduates, remarks from Dr. Gabbard, a student presentation by Cheryl Murillo (‘22), an overview of honors designations, and presentation of degrees and certificates.

“Whether you know what you want to do with your life or not, continuing your education gives you independence and freedom,” Murillo said to students in her commencement address. “No matter what those choices are or how many times they change, you will always have the knowledge you acquired at each step. If your original plans fall through, an education will allow you to jump right into another career or chase another dream. It will open doors for you and give you so many more opportunities.”

The anticipation for future plans was palpable among the graduates on Saturday. Zach Mears, who graduated with his Associate in Science degree, voiced his excitement to continue his education after MCC. “I plan to work several more months at my current full-time job and then transfer to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to pursue a bachelor’s degree in journalism,” he said.

Another student, Leonardo Gallegos, graduated with his AAS in construction management. He will be going on to study at Illinois State University to pursue a bachelor’s in construction management. “My goal is to get into custom home building,” he said.

But perhaps the most common sentiment was expressed by Sara Chavez, who received her High School Equivalency. “I’m just excited and proud to be done!”

In the week leading up to the commencement ceremony, all soon-to-be MCC graduates were encouraged to participate in a variety of activities including e-portfolio assistance, Alumni Association signups, and fun photo sessions.
