Revisit Holiday Favorite "A Christmas Carol" at MCC's Latest Experts and Insights Speaker Series

Get in the holiday spirit with a new take on Ebenezer Scrooge’s well-known tale of personal transformation during McHenry County College’s latest Experts and Insights educational speaker series “A Christmas Carol Revisited: Scrooge’s Reclamation” Thursday, December 15 at 6 p.m. The session, held in the College’s Luecht Auditorium, will be presented by English instructor Ted Hazelgrove and retired philosophy instructor Jim Gould.

“Most of us know A Christmas Carol from the popular films—but Charles Dickens gives us more than a pleasing tale in his novella: he gives us a profound moral meditation,” said Hazelgrove.

“In this session, we’ll analyze the background and historical impact of this story and examine the lessons of Scrooge’s journey from closed-hearted and cruel to repentant and redeemed,” Gould added.

Ted Hazelgrove has taught writing and literature at MCC for 25 years. He received an MFA in poetry from the University of Arizona and has been an aspiring poet for most of his life. He is an avid amateur musician and has an insatiable curiosity for anything new.

Jim Gould taught for 33 years in the Department of Philosophy at MCC. He is the author of over 40 peer-reviewed articles in philosophy, theology, bioethics, disability studies, and higher education curriculum. Since his retirement in 2020, Jim continues to publish in disability studies and serves on the boards of several disability groups and healthcare committees.

The session is free and open to the public. Registration is requested but walk-ins are welcome.

The Experts and Insights series originally started in 2019 as an opportunity for the community to experience the high quality of education and expertise provided by MCC’s faculty as they present topics in their fields of study.
