McHenry County College (MCC) invites the community to get creative, try something new, and make something special this fall with their latest lineup of Community Enrichment classes. From festive workshops and creative nights out to hands-on classes that make unique gifts, MCC’s offerings provide many ways to enjoy the season or give the gift of a new experience.
For those looking to make something with their own hands, several classes offer projects that are perfect for holiday gifting or seasonal decorating. “Candle Making Creations” lets participants craft themed candles with Riverside Candle Shop, including a harvest-inspired teacup, barrel cactus, and snowball candle. Classes are offered October 14, November 18 and December 2, from 6–8 p.m. at MCC’s Catalyst Campus.
Participants can also create a one-of-a-kind keepsake during “Custom Wood Creations: Sweater Weather” on October 22 or “Custom Wood Creations: Ornaments” on December 10, both from 6–8 p.m. Attendees will choose a design, paint the wooden pieces, and assemble a custom item to enjoy or give as a gift.
Get into the holiday spirit with “Clay Creations,” where participants will hand-build seasonal ceramic projects without a pottery wheel. Fall themes include pumpkins and ghosts on October 8, Thanksgiving on November 12, and holiday creations on December 10. Each class runs from 6–9 p.m.
Those interested in exploring the art of fused glass can join workshops at Material Things Artisan Market in Woodstock. Participants will create unique jewelry and ornaments in the introductory workshop, offered September 20 and 27 or November 29 and December 6. A second-level workshop on October 11 and 18 offers the opportunity to create larger pieces such as platters, bowls, and wall art. Holiday ornament fused glass classes are available multiple dates between October and December.
For a creative night out, MCC’s Paint Nights offer step-by-step acrylic painting instruction in a relaxed, social setting. “Ghostly Pumpkins” takes place October 21, “Fall in Illinois” takes place November 18, and “Santa’s Night Ride” is December 9. All classes run from 6:30–9:30 p.m. and are designed for beginner to intermediate painters.
The College is also offering a hands-on holiday decorating experience with “Holiday Wreath Making” on December 3 from 6–7:30 p.m. All supplies are included.
For those who enjoy entertaining, MCC’s wine classes offer an opportunity to expand their knowledge while discovering new favorites. “Italian Wines: Discover. Taste. Compare.” runs Thursdays, October 8–29, from 6–8 p.m. and explores Italy’s diverse wine regions, grape varieties, and food pairings through guided tastings. “Wine: Unique Grape Varietals” meets October 9 and 16 from 6–8 p.m. and introduces guests to lesser-known grapes and distinctive wines. Both classes include wine tastings and regional food pairings and are for ages 21 and older.
Cookie decorating also gets a seasonal twist this fall. During “Fun with Cookie Decorating,” participants will learn decorating techniques while creating six themed sugar cookies. “Halloween” takes place October 13, “Turkey Talk” November 10, and “Holiday” December 8, all from 6–8 p.m.
Additional Q4 Community Enrichment offerings include hands-on classes in small engine repair, welding and metal art, gardening, and horsemanship and riding classes offered in partnership with Main Stay Therapeutic Farm. There are also several Kids and College classes available for younger learners, including a Makers Camp, holiday-themed science classes, and technology classes, and more.
