- What is VITA?
VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is a service offered by MCC and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It is available from January through April of each year. VITA prepares tax returns for lower/moderate income taxpayers and for taxpayers that have basic returns that include wages, retirement income, some interest and dividends, and itemized deductions.
- What if I need help and it is not between January and April of each year?
According to our funding grant and the rules and procedures of the IRS, we are not able to assist between May and December of each year.
- What if I lost my copy of my tax return? I need a new copy now. Can you get one for me?
The VITA program is not permitted to maintain copies of tax returns. Request copies of tax returns from the IRS. Transcripts of your tax return can be emailed or mailed to your by the IRS.
- I received a letter from the IRS or the State of Illinois. Can you help me?
We cannot assist with communications from government bodies. Please contact the sender of the communication and provide the response requested.
- It is between May and December and I need a tax return prepared. Can you help?
Our funding does not provide us with the opportunity to assist outside of January to April of each year. You may be able to find assistance by going to IRS’ VITA site locator
