Sonography Program Admission Policies and Procedures
Admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program is selective and competitive. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

All general education, support, and DMS prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher to be considered for admission.
Minimum GPA: A 2.5 cumulative GPA is required
Residency: Preference given to applicants residing within District #528
Note: All admission requirements must be complete or in progress to apply to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography, AAS program. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic advisor to plan their courses and verify prerequisites.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography, AAS Program Admissions Process
MCC Student ID Requirement
Applicants must have an MCC student ID number to apply. If you have not previously attended MCC as a credit student, submit an MCC Admissions form and $15 application fee, or in person at the Registration Office (Room A258).
Transcripts
Applicants who have completed general education or prerequisite coursework at another institution must submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.
Transcripts must be submitted to the MCC Admissions Office with a request for evaluation for the DMS program. It is recommended that transcripts and evaluation requests be submitted at least one month before the application deadline.
Application Submission
The online Diagnostic Medical Sonography program application opens February 1 and closes April 30 each year.
Letters of Recommendation
Two professional letters of recommendation are required and must address the following areas:
- Professionalism and Work Ethic: Reliability, responsibility, and initiative
- Interpersonal Skills: Communication, teamwork, and patient interaction
- Academic and Technical Aptitude: Strength in science, math, and critical thinking
- Motivation and Commitment: Dedication to healthcare and academic success
- Character and Integrity: Ethical behavior, accountability, and professionalism
Essay Requirement
Applicants must submit a 500-word essay addressing the prompt:
“What makes you the best candidate for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at McHenry County College, and what drives your passion for Sonography?”
Essays will be evaluated for content, organization, grammar, and originality, and will be processed through Turnitin to verify authorship.
Interview
Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a one-hour interview with the Program Chair and Clinical Education Coordinator. Interviews will be conducted annually in May.
Job Shadow Requirement
Only applicants who are invited for an interview with the Program Chair and Clinical Education Coordinator must complete a four-hour job shadow experience in a sonography department.
Notification of Acceptance
Applicants will be notified of admission decisions by mid-June each year
