Wondering what to do with some of those hard-to-recycle items you’ve found in your latest declutter? The 2026 McHenry County Green Guide, now available online and in print, features the latest information on responsibly recycling and disposing of everything from household chemicals to electronics and beyond.
New in the 20th edition of the publication is information about free latex paint recycling, battery recycling, and updated tips for recycling makeup, medicines and sharps, pet food bags, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. There are also featured articles by Marta Keane, Executive Director of the Battery Network, and Kelli Boeckmann, Solid Waste Manager at the McHenry County Department of Health, about Recycle Coach—an online platform designed to help residents find where and how to recycle and dispose of items.
“This year’s guide reflects how quickly recycling options are evolving,” said Kim Hankins, Manager of the Sustainability Center at McHenry County College (MCC). “We’ve included more resources, added new programs, and made it easier than ever for residents to take practical steps toward reducing waste. It’s all about meeting people where they are and helping them make more sustainable choices every day.”
All categories have been updated with the latest recycling information, including tips on recycling plastic film and bags, paint, tires, bulbs, and more. Readers will also find details on multiple county-wide electronics collections and shredding events, including a household hazardous waste collection on June 6 at the Huntley School District Reed Road Campus. Pre-registration is required for this event at www.mcdh.info.
The Green Guide is available online, and printed copies can be requested by emailing sustainability@mchenry.edu. Copies will also be available at local municipalities, township offices, and libraries. A fully translated Spanish version will be available soon, with printed copies also available upon request.
