McHenry County College (MCC) recently honored two students, Jermaine Ayers and Juan Rodriguez, with the Fall 2025 Joseph A. Blanco Spirit Award, which includes a $600 scholarship. The award was founded in 2009 by Joe Blanco—a beloved MCC tutor and member of the ADS staff—before he passed away in 2011. It honors students who inspire others everyday with their positive spirit and “can do” attitude.
Both Jermaine and Juan were selected by MCC’s Access and Disability Services (ADS) department, who felt they both embodied the qualities that the award recognizes.
Jermaine was nominated by ADS tutor Ellen Morton.
“Jermaine’s story is remarkable—particularly his decision to return to school after a 30-year hiatus,” Morton said in her nomination letter. “Struggling academically and living through many hard turns, Jermaine returned to education determined to better himself. His appreciative attitude and perseverance have been deeply impressive. Jermaine has adopted a powerful mantra: ‘I’m just going to do my best’. And his best is truly impressive given the obstacles he has overcome. Most importantly, Jermaine embodies perseverance, openness, and courage to grow, which are traits so important to Joe and so central to the award.”
Juan was nominated by Naina Richards, Director of Access and Disability Services at MCC.
“Juan is an exceptionally resilient, hardworking, and mission-driven student who fully embodies a positive spirit and a commitment to growth,” Richards said in her nomination letter. “He demonstrates remarkable determination in navigating academic challenges and advocating for accessible, inclusive, and equitable learning environments not only for himself, but for everyone around him—modeling leadership, integrity, and genuine care for his community. His perseverance, strong work ethic, and belief in doing what is right make him stand out. He is deeply committed to his education and to making a meaningful impact. Juan’s character, dedication, and positive spirit truly represent the values of this award.”
The ADS Department is exceptionally proud of these two outstanding students and all they continue to accomplish.
