McHenry County College (MCC) continues to expand the training and professional education available through its Career Spark Center, recently introducing two new programs: Sterile Processing Technician Training and the Professional Aeronautics Certificate (PAC).
Sterile Processing Technician Training teaches students how to clean, sterilize, assemble, and distribute surgical instruments and medical equipment used in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and surgical centers. The curriculum is aligned with standards set by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) and prepares students for the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) exam.
Students will gain knowledge in microbiology and infection control, surgical instrumentation, sterilization techniques, and inventory and equipment management. The program includes classroom instruction and hands-on clinical lab experience. Upon passing the course, students receive a provisional license, valid until they complete a required 400-hour clinical rotation.
“This program is a great fit for those who want to work in healthcare but may be more interested in a behind-the-scenes role,” said Alex Benn, Coordinator of Career Spark Programs at MCC. “Sterile processing technicians are in high demand.
The College also launched a Professional Aeronautics Certificate (PAC) pilot program earlier this year, in partnership with JB Aviation. Designed for individuals seeking a streamlined path to a career in aviation, the PAC program allows students to earn all key FAA certifications in as little as 16 months through an immersive, cohort-based model.
Students will split their time training between MCC’s Catalyst Campus and JB Aviation at Galt Airport. Weekly instruction includes 15–20 hours of classroom learning, one-on-one instruction, and simulator- and aircraft-based flight time, preparing students to earn all of the requisite FAA certifications to become professional aviators, including: Private Pilot License (PPL), Instrument Flight Rating (IFR), Commercial Pilot License (CPL), Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII), and Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI). Graduates will be equipped for immediate employment as flight instructors or entry-level commercial pilots.
Both programs are part of MCC’s Career Spark Center, which provides short-term training and certifications aligned with regional workforce needs. These programs are ideal for adult learners, those looking to change careers, or recent graduates wanting to enter the workforce quickly without committing to a traditional degree program.
