McHenry County College (MCC) will be displaying Home by artist Anne Hughes now through October 31 in the Epping Gallery, located outside the MCC Store in Building B.
The exhibition brings together works featuring the recurring house/arrow form, a symbol of humanity’s precious home in the universe, inner peace, and the possibilities of directions ahead. Each creative journey is an adventure in facing the unexpected. Hughes often returns to themes of nature, the cosmos, science, and the vastness of what is known—and what is not. Color, form, and space evolve through abstracted, layered imagery, opening emotional and intellectual responses. With careful thought and observation, Hughes experiences shifts in perception that guide her toward new directions, tapping into the wonders and complexities of existence.
Anne Hughes has exhibited widely across the United States and Canada, with solo shows at ZIA Gallery and Epiphany Center for the Arts in Chicago, Galerie de la Ville and McClure Gallery in Québec, Prairie Gallery in Alberta, and other venues. She recently curated Immense Journeys: Art, Nature, Science and Beyond at UIMA Chicago, featuring works by Melissa Jay Craig, Lisa A. Frank, and herself, and has also presented work at Art Now and AQUA, Art Miami/Basel satellite exhibitions.
Her honors include the William B. Bruce Fine Arts European Travel Scholarship from the Canadian-Scandinavian Foundation, a Sheila Hugh MacKay Foundation grant, and fellowships at the Anderson Center, Millay Colony, Ucross Foundation, Ragdale, and Villa Montalvo. She earned her BFA from Concordia University, Montréal; MA from Eastern Illinois University; and MFA from Bowling Green State University, Ohio.
