Friends of MCC Foundation Hosts Annual Appreciation Breakfast

The Friends of McHenry County College (MCC) Foundation welcomed more than 160 scholarship donors and recipients for an appreciation breakfast on Friday, February 28. The event was an opportunity to thank and honor the generous donors who make scholarships available to MCC students.

Among those receiving scholarships and speaking on a panel at the event were Daniel Krulak, Max Mendez, Madelyn O’Neill, and Samantha Stubits. Each student shared stories about their decision to attend MCC, their experience at the College, their career goals, and how they have been positively impacted by receiving a scholarship.

“It was incredibly moving to hear directly from our students about how these scholarships have transformed their lives,” said Brian DiBona, Executive Director of the Friends of MCC Foundation. “Their determination and success are a testament to the power of education, and we’re privileged to play a part in their journeys.”

Sandra Pierce, President of Phoenix Woodworking Corporation in Woodstock, also spoke at the event about why she donates and the importance of creating opportunities for others. Pierce is a Foundation corporate sponsor, Education to Empowerment member, and former Foundation Board member. She also provided the Steve and Sandra Pierce Endowment Scholarship.

“Scholarships do more than alleviate financial burdens; they open doors to opportunities that might otherwise remain closed,” Pierce said. “Investing in scholarships is not merely an act of charity, it is a strategic investment in our community’s future. By supporting students today, we lay the foundation for a more vibrant, resilient, and prosperous community tomorrow. A scholarship to MCC is not just a donation—it is a statement of belief in the power of education and the promise of those who seek it.”

The Friends of MCC Foundation awarded 900 scholarships totaling more than $760,000 in 2024 alone.

"This event is always a highlight for us, as it brings our donors and student scholarship recipients together in a meaningful way," said DiBona. “We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our donors, and continually amazed by the hard work, dedication, and ambition of our students.”

The Foundation is currently accepting applications for Fall 2025 scholarships until April 1, 2025. Scholarship opportunities include a variety of criteria based on area of study, educational and career goals, GPA, extracurricular activities, financial need, and more.
