Working as an EMS provider requires significant physical strength, dexterity, and the ability to function in very adverse environments with exposure to numerous safety risks typically found at emergency scenes. CAAHEP Accreditation Statements

The McHenry County College Paramedic program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

The minimum expectations goal of the program is, "to prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels."

What makes MCC's Prehospital Emergency Care, AAS program better than or distinct from similar programs at other institutions?

MCC's EMS program provides opportunities for a range of students and working professionals in this field.

Emergency Medical Responder:
This is the entry level-course that provides the non-medical responder with knowledge and basic skills to provide first response treatment to victims of illness and injury with the goal to maintain basic life functions until an ambulance/rescue unit arrives.
Emergency Medical Technician:
An EMT provides a detailed study of patient assessment and basic life support management of someone experiencing illness or traumatic injuries. The goal of treatment is to recognize abnormal physical assessment findings and provide basic life support treatments. Upon successful completion of the classroom and clinical requirements for the program, students are eligible for licensure examination within the state of Illinois. Licensure is required for employment.
Paramedic:
The paramedic training program provides an intensive study of the human body with focus on the recognition of life threatening medical illnesses and traumatic injuries. The goal of patient care is to deliver advanced life support treatments based on assessment findings. Upon successful completion of the classroom, lab and clinical internship requirements, students are eligible for licensure examination within the state of Illinois. Licensure is required for employment.

All EMS faculty are professionals with multiple years of working in the EMS field in the McHenry County community. You'll benefit as much from your instructor's experience and hands-on skills labs as you will from the formal curriculum. Many instructors invite other licensed professionals into the classroom to share their perspectives, giving you insight into the day-to-day realities of the field.

What have graduates gone on to do?

  • Graduates of our EMS program have gone on to work for the Secret Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency, coroner's office, and local healthcare providers like Centegra.

Semesters to complete assumes students are taking a full-time credit load of 12 credits per semester (the minimum required for federal financial aid).

Proportion of students completing in normal time is the percentage of completers who earned the credential within the specified time of their first enrollment at the College.

Students attending part-time or changing their program of study are two common reasons why they may not complete in "normal" time.
