MCC Speech and Debate Team Celebrates Recent Wins

The McHenry County College (MCC) Speech and Debate team recently had a successful competition at the Frank-ly Speaking Tournament hosted by College of DuPage on Saturday, January 18.

MCC student Sabrina Nari (McHenry) placed first in Open Dramatic Interpretation and third in Community College Prose. Mark Luchsinger (McHenry) placed sixth in Open Speaking to Entertain. Calvin Hamill (Spring Grove) and Caden Kotecki (Harvard) placed first and second in Community College Extemporaneous Speaking and fourth and fifth in Community College Impromptu. Clara Solak (Crystal Lake) placed third in Community College Speaking to Entertain, and Elsbeth Haylock (Hebron) placed fifth in Community College Prose.

“This was our very best showing this season. All but two of the events we entered advanced to finals,” said program director, Bonnie Gabel. “I’m very excited for our chances at the national competition in Norfolk, VA this April.”
MCC’s team is part of the two-year honorary association, Phi Rho Pi, which has held national tournaments since the 1930s.

The Speech and Debate team competes in a variety of oral interpretation and public speaking events throughout the year. The group focuses on the performance of literature, platform speaking, and debate to enhance the development of communication skills.

The community is invited to see these accomplished students on April 3 at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in their Spring Showcase in Room A211 at the College, 8900 US Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.
