MCC Art Galleries to Feature Works by Jean Alexander Frater, Alum Julia Signe

McHenry County College (MCC) will be hosting an exhibit titled Color Form by artist Jean Alexander Frater, now through February 23 in Galleries One and Two, located inside and outside the library respectively. There will also be a gallery talk and reception on Wednesday, February 21 at 3:30 p.m. in Gallery One (A212x). The event is free and open to the public.

In the exhibit, Alexander Frater experiments with the materials inherent to painting, then integrates other histories, traditions, and language into the form.

Alexander Frater was a 2017-2018 Chicago Artists BOLT resident, received an MFA from School of Art the Institute of Chicago, and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Dayton, Ohio. Her work has been exhibited internationally in venues such as the Wexner Center for Arts in Columbus; El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe; Images Festival, Toronto; Ben-Gurion airport, Tel Aviv; THE MISSION Gallery, Chicago; and McKenzie Fine Art in New York. She is the director of artist-run project space Material in Chicago. More of her work can be viewed at www.alexanderfrater.com or on Instagram @jeanalexanderfrater.

On display in the Epping Gallery (outside the MCC Store in Building B) is Flight Lines by Julia Signe, now through February 9.

Signe, a Norwegian American painter, photographer, and illustrator, is an MCC alum based of out of Chicago. In the exhibit, she explores the bird as a classical symbol of freedom and combines it with the human body to convey a message of her idealized aspiration for people: to be vulnerable, liberated, and courageous. These ‘Bird People’ are actors in playful, often autobiographical, anecdotes of heroines and nomads who conquer faraway places and touch the Divine.

After graduating MCC, Signe received her BFA in painting from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is currently pursuing artist residencies internationally before continuing her education at a graduate level. Most recently, one of her oil paintings, Rechazada, was added into the collection of Beth Rudin DeWooody. See more of Signe’s work at www.juliasigne.com or on Instagram @julia.signe_studio.
