MCC Speech and Debate Team Wins Gold at Nationals

The McHenry County College (MCC) Speech and Debate Team recently won a Gold Team Sweepstakes award at the 2023 Phi Rho Pi National Tournament in Bethesda, MD.

Isabella Aguilar (McHenry) won Gold for Persuasive Speaking, Silver for Prose Interpretation, and Bronze for Dramatic Interpretation. Angelina Smith (Crystal Lake) also won Bronze for Prose Interpretation. Also competing were Jake Hatter (Woodstock) and Brennan Briske (Crystal Lake).

“This is our second Gold award in the team’s 20-year history,” said Bonne Gabel, a Speech instructor at MCC who leads the Speech and Debate team. “I am so proud of how the team performed this year.”

MCC’s Speech and Debate team competes in a variety of oral interpretation and public speaking events throughout the year. The group focuses on the performance of literature, platform speaking, and debate to enhance the development of communication skills.

“Our team’s success would not be possible without the support of the College and my assistant coach (and MCC alum), Sarah Metivier Schadt,” Gable added.
