McHenry County College Celebrates First Student Studying Abroad Since Pandemic, Opens Program for 2023

Students at McHenry County College (MCC) can once again pursue their dreams of learning in a different country. The College’s Study Abroad program is now open to students after being closed since March 2020.

“We are thrilled to once again offer these programs to MCC students,” said Lindsay Carson, Spanish instructor and Philosophy and Languages department chair who leads MCC’s study abroad program. “Study abroad gives students a unique opportunity to build their resume with the global experience that many transfer institutions and employers are looking for in their applicants.”

Through MCC’s partnership with the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs, students are able to earn credits by studying abroad in Austria, Costa Rica, England, France, Ireland, and Spain.

The College’s first student studying abroad after the pandemic, Brady Bird, starts his semester in January 2023 at Canterbury Christ Church University in Canterbury, England.

“I was interested in studying abroad because of my love of traveling,” said Bird. “Plus many of my friends have studied abroad and tell me it’s an amazing experience. I chose the program in England because the classes available there best lined up with my goals of transferring to earn a bachelor’s degree.”

Bird said he is most excited for meeting new people and seeing new things while studying abroad, as well as traveling to other countries while in Europe.

“MCC made this experience easy. Without their help in making sure I got the classes I needed, I could’ve gotten very lost. There was a lot of paperwork, but overall it was pretty straightforward.”
