MCC Students Receive Recognition at Skyway Writer’s Festival

Two McHenry County College (MCC) students recently placed in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) 2020 Writers Competition and Festival.

Paul Kranenburg of Woodstock won second prize in the Drama category, and Rileigh Sullivan of Lake in the Hills placed second in the Poetry category.

“This year’s Skyway Writer’s Competition included more than 100 talented writers from all over the state,” said Starr Nordgren, instructor of English and department chair at MCC. “We’re extremely proud that our students were among those recognized. The English department at MCC always strives to offer a supportive and nurturing environment for students to explore their potential.”

The ISCC consists of eight colleges and the Writer’s Competition is held annually each fall. This year, there were a total of 114 submissions in four categories (creative nonfiction, fiction, drama, and poetry). The first round of competition happens at the school level. After soliciting submissions, each school’s coordinator selects the pieces that will move on to the statewide competition—typically, schools only submit one entry per student to the final round. Winners are then selected by a panel of writing professionals/judges selected by the host school.
