Service Learning and Volunteerism

Volunteer Spotlight:
Jaclyn DeBruyne

Jaclyn

Jackie regularly helped at the thrift store, even after a full day at school or working at her full time job.  She was always pleasant, compassionate, kind and willing to do whatever was needed to help our organization prosper.  Jackie was such a tremendous asset, we are sad that she has completed her hours with us and hope that we will see her again when her name is "in lights."

Service learning is a teaching method that combines community service with academic advancement. Students learn about civic responsibility while participating in organized community service activities that respond to the needs in our area.

Are you…

Below are some comments from students sharing their experience with Service and Volunteerism courses at MCC during the spring semester.

I had hoped going into the volunteer program to be able to learn new things that I could incorporate in my classroom and I did, I learned patience, I learned understanding, and I learned a higher form of caring for all children.

If it was not for this assignment, I would never have taken the step forward to give it a try.

By taking the final you test your knowledge on what you learned from class but, with the MCC Buddies program, I learned what exactly it is like to become a friend to someone who has an exceptionality.

The service learning option should not be optional. Students have much more to gain from the hands on experience than taking a final exam.

EDU253, Children with Exceptionalities

A person can learn a lot from classroom discussions and reading textbooks, but it is when that person is actively involved in what he or she is learning when it makes the biggest difference of all.

EDU253, Children with Exceptionalities

I received the experience of what it is like to be a teacher in a special education classroom and how much hard work it takes to keep the children focused. I personally needed this interaction because it was unfamiliar territory to me.

I would definitely recommend that future students choose to do some kind of service learning because it was an amazing experience. You are exposed to new things, new people, and have so much fun doing it.
