MCC to Offer Foreign and Sign Language Classes

Boost your brain by learning a new foreign language or sign language with a variety of classes offered by the McHenry County College Continuing Education Department.

 

The following classes begin in September:

 

American Sign Language I: Learn fingerspelling and basic survival signs that can be used in a variety of settings. The required textbook is: “A Basic Course in American Sign Language,” by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden, and Terrence J. O’Rourke, ISBN-13: 978- 0932666420. The book must be purchased on your own before the start of class and is not available in the MCC Bookstore. Class takes place from 6:30-8:20 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 11 through Nov. 27 in Room A119. Use course code: NFL S01 010 to register. Cost is $139.

 

American Sign Language II: Gain a deeper insight into ASL and deaf culture with discussion articles and profiles of legendary deaf leaders. Learn more about ASL grammar, facial expressions, receptive skills, expressive skills and classifiers. This class is taught by a deaf instructor. The required textbook is: “A Basic Course in American Sign Language,” by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden, and Terrence J. O’Rourke, ISBN-13: 978-0932666420. The book must be purchased on your own prior to the start of class and is not available in the MCC Bookstore. No class on Nov. 22.  Class takes place from 6:30-8:20 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 6 through Nov. 29 in Room A205. Use course code: NFL S02 002 to register. Cost is $139.

 

Arabic I: Learn the basic aspects of the Arabic language including speaking, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. Discover many interesting facts about the culture of Arabic-speaking countries. The required books are “Read and Speak Arabic” by McGraw-Hill, second edition, ISBN: 9780071739665 and “Your First 100 Words in Arabic” with audio CD, by Jane Wightwick, ISBN: 0071469281. Textbooks must be purchased on your own before the start of class and will cost around $25. Books are not available in the MCC Bookstore. Class takes place from 6-7:50 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 6 through Oct. 25 in Room A207. Use course code: NFL S13 005 to register. Cost is $119. 

 

French I: This class is for people who have little or no knowledge of the French language. Structure, vocabulary, phonetics and common phrases will be taught to enable verbal and written communication. The required textbook is “5-Minute French” with audio CD by Berlitz, ISBN: 9789812684578. Textbook must be purchased on your own prior to start of class and is not available in the MCC Bookstore. Class takes place from 6-7:00 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 11 through Oct. 30 in Room A211. Use course code: NFL S03 005 to register. Cost is $119.

 

Spanish I: Focus on the beginning aspects of Spanish including basic writing, speaking, pronunciation, listening, understanding, and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. You’ll use grammar, vocabulary, and verbs in the most basic structure of the language. The required book is “Spanish Is Fun Book 1: Lively Lessons for Beginners” by Amsco School Publications, third edition, ISBN: 9781567654646. Textbook must be purchased on your own prior to start of class and is not available in the MCC Bookstore. No class on Oct. 17. Class takes place from 12:30-2:20 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 5 through Oct. 31 in Room A350. Used Course Code NFL S05 022 to register. Cost $119.
