MCC Seeks Student Volunteers for Social Media Coaching

[Wednesday, June 7, 2017]

McHenry County College students are invited to participate as social media coaches for members of the Retired Adult Program (RAP) at MCC, who are interested in learning social media platforms.

Students will be partnered with one adult and will mentor him or her through the use of one or more of the many social media platforms, including Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Snapchat, Twitter or YouTube.

The students and retirees will work together for three weeks under the supervision of MCC faculty, plus a social media expert. At the last class, participants will share the information they learned and a light breakfast and coffee will be served.

The Social Media Training will take place from 9-10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 on the MCC campus at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

While RAP members are learning how to use social media, students will have an opportunity to earn volunteer credit toward graduation.

“Students can use the hours they coach retirees toward their Silver Cord award,” said Sherry Ridge, business instructor. “This is a hands-on learning experience in mentoring others and provides an intergenerational opportunity for the students and the RAP members.”

Ridge added that some MCC instructors may give extra credit to students for participating and reporting their volunteer hours.

This social media training program is a collaboration between the MCC Athletics Department, Business Department and RAP, Ridge said.

“It is important and vital for departments across the campus to work together to meet our college’s goals,” said Karen Wiley, director of athletics. “I am excited to see our student-athletes teach new skills to some, and then also learn from others they may have never met without this opportunity. It will be a learning experience for all involved.”

Students who are interested in volunteering as a social media coach may contact Sherry Ridge at (815) 479-7682 or email her at Community members ages 50 or better who are interested in learning how to use social media must register in RAP at the $25 annual membership fee and then sign up for the Social Media Training class. Fee for the social media class is $10. For more information on RAP, call Dori Sullens (815) 455-8559.
