[Friday, May 26, 2017]

Learn how to beautify your yard, create your own sanctuary or learn about the area birds that live in your backyard with classes offered by McHenry County College’s Continuing Education Department.

The following classes are available:

McHenry County Birding: Explore beyond the birds in your backyard and discover how to identify the hundreds species that can be found in the area. Jeff Aufmann of the McHenry County Audubon will present a two-part class beginning with a lecture on avian biology, traits and behaviors and the best places to go birding in the area. Participants will learn about the latest Internet and smartphone technologies available to track species and will go outside for an approximately two-hour bird walk to practice using binoculars and spotting scope techniques. The first class takes place from 6:30-8:20 p.m. Thursday, June 1, in Room A103 in MCC and the second class takes place from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, June 3 at a location discussed at the first class. Cost is $39. Use course code: NAN S20 001 to register.

Color in the Garden: Learn the principles of color theory and how designers and gardeners can use color in interesting ways to create moods in the garden. Class members will discuss primary, secondary and tertiary colors; hot and cool shades of the color wheel; and how to create harmony, balance and contrast. The instructor will recommend trees, plants, shrubs, roses, herbs, perennials, and grasses that in groups dazzle the viewer from dawn to dusk. The instructor will bring samples from the landscapes she has designed and created. Class takes place from 1-2:50 p.m. Thursday, June 8 in Room A103 at MCC. Cost is $29. Use course code: NPG S31 001 to register.

Therapeutic Gardens: Learn the features, benefits, and design aspects of therapeutic gardens. We’re all connected to nature, and it’s important to maintain this vital connection for our health and well-being. Research has established that patients as well as stressed individuals have recovered very rapidly when they’re exposed to nature. Class takes place from 1-2:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 14 in Room A103 at MCC. Cost is $29. Use course code: NPG S71 001 to register.
