MCC Offers Academic Summer Camps and Classes for Kids, Teens

[Thursday, March 23, 2017]

Keep your children busy this summer with academic and enriching programs at McHenry County College. The MCC Kids and College program is offered June 19 through August 10 for students entering grades 1-12. You can choose to send your child for one week or all six weeks. Flexible programming is available, including before and after care to accommodate parents’ busy schedules.

“These quality and affordable programs aim to keep kids engaged in learning, sharpen critical thinking skills, inspire creativity and maybe even light a spark for a future career,” said Laura Beaupre, coordinator of College and Career Readiness at MCC.

Kids and College offers half-day academic and enrichment classes and a full-day STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) camps to prepare students for their upcoming school year, expose them to 21st century learning skills, and expand their knowledge in many content areas. Instructors include MCC faculty, certified teachers and support staff who bring their passion and enthusiasm to MCC each day, so each child can experience the joy of learning.

Kids and College offers a full menu of digital media and technology classes, including Computer Gaming, 2D Animation, APP Development, Web Design and a new Maker’s Lab 3D for students in grades 2-9 who want to be designers of the future. The focus of the class is “if you can dream it, you can make it.” Students will sculpt, texture and render their own 3D creations and older students will get to work in MCC’s Fabrication Lab. Class takes place for younger students in the morning from 9 a.m. to noon and older students in the afternoon from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 31-Aug. 3.

The popular MCC Tech Camp STEM offers weeklong sessions Monday through Thursday for students entering grades 1-9. Each week brings a different theme such as Dream Big: Engineering Our World, CSI Introduction to Forensics and Biometrics, NASA Aeronautic Engineers: Mooncraft Challenge (Minecraft), and all levels of Robotic Academy Camps.

The full-day MCC Tech camp is a one-week camp offering hands-on learning in the areas of science, engineering, art, and technology as well as outdoor fun. All campers in MCC Tech Camp will be placed in their age group of no more than 20 students.

Summer Academy classes include academic enrichment classes designed to tap into kids’ creativity and critical thinking skills. Popular classes include: Baking School, Creative Writing, Persuasive Writing, Algebra, Geometry, Intro to Web Design and Fitness and Wellness.

Flexible Schedules are available, including one- and two-week Summer Academy classes, offered in both the morning and afternoon with an option to stay for lunch. New this year is before and after care, from 7:30-9 a.m. and 3-5:30 p.m. (after MCC Tech Camp), and 4-5:30 p.m. (after MCC Summer Academy).
