MCC Student Veterans Receive $10,000 Books and Laptops Grant[Monday, February 13, 2017]
The Friends of MCC Foundation received an anonymous $10,000 donation to support the MCC Student Veterans Program textbook and laptop grants to benefit student veterans this spring semester.
The donation is put toward the Pay it Forward Book Grant that bridges the gap between the veterans’ GI Bill benefits and receipt of military funds for books – funds that veterans don’t always receive before classes start.
“This anonymous gift arrives at MCC at a critical time in the school year,” said Loreen Keller, interim dean for Humanities and Social Sciences, who also serves as the veterans’ program administrator. “Many new and returning student veterans have tight budgets at the beginning of spring semester and this generous gift allows the Student Resource Center to continue to support textbook and laptop purchases to increase academic and career achievement.”
Keller said the laptop grants have been beneficial for dozens of MCC student veterans since the book and laptop program began in 2014. Students who receive laptops are requested to volunteer 20 hours each during the semester or school year, at programs on campus or at community programs or events.
“Having a laptop computer is critical to success, Keller said, and encourages retention and persistence upon return to college,” she said.
