MCC to Offer Five Language Classes for Non-Credit

McHenry County College offers five different non-credit language classes for anyone to learn for fun, travel or job advancement.

The following classes are available:

Arabic I: Learn the basic aspects of the Arabic language including speaking, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. Plus, discover many interesting facts about the culture of Arabic-speaking countries. The required books are “Read and Speak Arabic” by McGraw-Hill, second edition, ISBN: 9780071739665 and “Your First 100 Words in Arabic” with audio CD, by Jane Wightwick, ISBN: 0071469281. Textbooks must be purchased prior to the start of class and will cost around $25. Books are not available in the MCC Bookstore. Class meets from 6-7:50 p.m. on Mondays from Jan. 30 through March 20 in Room A113. Cost is $119. Use course code: NFL S13 004 to register.

Spanish I: Focus on the beginning aspects of Spanish, including basic writing, speaking, pronunciation, listening, understanding, and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. The required book is “Spanish Is Fun Book 1: Lively Lessons for Beginners” by Amsco School Publications, third edition, ISBN: 9781567654646. Textbook must be purchased prior to start of class and is not available in the MCC Bookstore. Class times available are either Tuesday afternoon or Thursday evening: noon-1:50 p.m. Tuesdays from Jan. 31 to March 21 in Room E121 or 6:30-8:20 p.m. Thursdays Feb. 2 through March 23 in Room E102. To register for this class, use course code: NFL S05 013. Cost is $119 per student for either class.

Sign Language I: Features fingerspelling and basic survival signs that can be used in a variety of settings. The required textbook is: “A Basic Course in American Sign Language” by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden and Terrence J. O’Rourke, ISBN-13: 978-0932666420. The book must be purchased on your own prior to the start of class and is available online. Class takes place from 6:30-8:20 p.m. on Wednesdays, Feb. 1 through April 26 in Room A241. Cost is $139. Use course code: NFL S01 008 to register. No class on March 29.

French I: Ideal for those with little or no knowledge of the French language. Structure, vocabulary, phonetics and common phrases will be taught to enable verbal and written communication. The required textbook is “5-Minute French” with audio CD by Berlitz, ISBN: 9789812684578. Textbook must be purchased prior to start of class. Book is not available in the MCC Bookstore. Class takes place from 6-7:50 p.m. Wednesdays from Feb. 1 through March 22 in Room E100. Cost is $119. Use course code: NFL S03 004.

German I: Germany has a rich history and diverse culture, which you’ll experience in this basic German language class. This course is ideal for those wanting to travel to German-speaking countries and/or learn basic German grammar, practice word pronunciation and phrase study. The required book is “The Everything Learning German Book,” second edition, with CD included, ISBN: 9781598699890. Textbook must be purchased prior to start of class and is not available in the MCC Bookstore. Class takes place from 6:30-8:20 p.m. on Thursdays from Feb. 9 through March 23 in Room E117. Cost is $109. Use course code NFL S21 004 to register.
