Learn the new exciting sport of Stand Up Paddle Boarding with a series of classes offered this summer by McHenry County College's Continuing Education Department. Classes include a demonstration land-based class, followed by a beginner water-based class and ending with a paddle board nature tour on the Chain of Lakes.
The following classes are available:
Stand Up Paddle Board Demonstration: This demonstration class will introduce you to the sport of Stand Up Paddle Boarding with emphasis on basic skills such as mounting the board, positioning, low speed maneuvering and the safety elements of riding the board. Awareness of conditions for appropriate use will also be discussed. This is a land-based with simulator class. Wear tennis/gym shoes and loose fitting workout clothing. To register, use course ID: NRE S40 006. Class takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 in Room E122 (Black Box Theatre) Cost is $25.
Land- and Water-Based Stand Up Paddle Board Lesson at Port of Blarney: The instructor will demonstrate Stand Up Paddle Boarding skills on land with a simulator board before going on the water to practice the previously learned skills of mounting, board position, paddle technique and board maneuvering as well as the elements of safety and awareness of the conditions. This land- and water-based class will meet at Port of Blarney, 27843 W. Grass Lake Rd. in Antioch. Wear clothing that is appropriate for the water and tennis or water shoes. To register, use course ID: NRE S41 006. Class takes place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 24. Cost is $40.
Stand Up Paddle Board Nature Tour: Utilize your Stand Up Paddle Board skills to get out for a longer period of time and enjoy the beautiful nature that the Illinois Chain of Lakes has to offer. The tour will begin at the Port of Blarney, 27843 W Grass Lake Rd. in Antioch and go north up to Grass Lake into the North Fox River and end at Blarney Island for a shuttle back to the Port. Wear clothing that is appropriate for the water and tennis or water shoes. To register, use course ID: NRE S42 007. Class takes place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 8. Cost is $59.
