McHenry County College (MCC) named Chad Cuconato of Lake in the Hills as the recipient of the Spring 2014 Joseph A. Blanco Spirit Award, a $600 gift given to a student with special needs who displays a positive attitude while pursuing a degree or certificate while overcoming a disability.
Cuconato was selected by the Special Needs staff based on his ability to work towards completion of a degree or certificate while overcoming a disability and maintaining a positive attitude.
He began at MCC fall 2012 and is working toward an Associate of Science degree. Cuconato plans to continue his education after graduation and hopes to pursue a career in the health sciences. He will use the award funds for tuition and/or book expenses at MCC during Fall 2014 Semester.
Joe Blanco, a longtime MCC Special Needs tutor, founded this award in 2009 as a way to honor the students who inspire us every single day. He passed away in 2011.
Special Needs tutor Cathy Aney has tutored Cuconato for two semesters and nominated him for the Spirit Award.
"Chad has more drive, energy, and spirit than any student I’ve worked with in a long time," Aney said. "Chad is always positive and works to get the best grades he possibly can. He embodies the qualifications for this special award."
