The Sage Learning Center at McHenry County College offers a new online writing tutoring service for MCC students as a convenient way to receive extra writing help.
The online writing tutoring offers students of all academic levels an alternative to coming in person to the Sage Learning Center by accessing writing help from home or anywhere. Students can submit a paper for review online at any time by uploading a Word document and receiving their paper back within two business days. It is not a live chat or a proofreading service, but instead, a tutor reads the paper, makes comments in text and pointing out more detailed errors or issues. The tutor also provides overarching comments in a message to the student on the paper’s organization, thesis, and/or other “big picture” issues.
Students receive their paper back with "mark ups" that he or she may use to revise their draft. This is similar to if a student came in-person to the Sage Center and left with a marked-up paper and notes.
"It allows for more flexibility for students," said Rowenna Miller, Sage Writing tutor. "We want to provide another way for students to seek help with writing if coming into the Sage Learning Center was difficult for them."
In addition to the writing tutoring, the writing tutors also provide handouts, grammar resources, and self-guided revision checklists for students, Miller said.
