MCC Retired Adult Program to Offer New Spring Classes

[Friday, April 11, 2014]

Join a book discussion group, learn about the early astronaut's wives, or explore how Russian and French classical music can be found in today’s culture. These are among the topics featured in April with the Retired Adult Program at McHenry County College.

The Retired Adult Program (RAP) offers exciting classes to engage the mind. It is a membership-based, non-credit program dedicated to adults ages 50 and older who are active, curious and serious about continually learning. The cost for a one-year membership is $25, renewable every July 1, and you must be a member to register for classes.

The following classes will begin soon:

Proof of Heaven: The book "Proof of Heaven" describes a neurosurgeon’s journey into the afterlife. It features a man who has made a solid commitment to his profession and a better understanding of his own exceptional near-death experience.  RAP members will discuss the theological, mystical and scientific issues this book raises about near death experiences and the instructor will show You Tube videos that are interviews of Dr. Eben Alexander. It is recommended to read "Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife," by Eben Alexander (ISBN: 9781451695199) before attending this workshop. Class takes place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 11 in Room E204 at MCC. Cost is $20 for members. Use course ID: NRA S15 004 when registering.

The Astronaut's Wives: The American heroes of the space race are well-known: Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong and more. But less well-known are a second set of heroes that are only now getting their due. This class will be a discussion of the wives of the early astronauts and how they coped with the perilous missions their husbands undertook as well as the sometimes unsolicited publicity they experienced. Come hear the untold story about the forgotten heroes who were married to our first space pioneers. Class takes place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 21 in Room E127. Cost is $20 for members. Use course ID:  NRA S13 004 when registering.

The Russians are Coming and Viva La France: A multimedia presentation explores how Russian Classical Music and French Classical music can be found in pop culture. Music written by five famous 19th century Russian composers:  Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky represent Russia’s contribution to the Romantic Era of classical music. Their music can now be found in today’s pop culture.  French classical music abounds in pop culture. The program highlights music written by five French composers. Musical selections by Delibes, Saint-Saëns, Ravel, Dukas and Offenbach provide examples of where their melodies can be found in unexpected places. Class takes place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, in Room E127 at MCC.  Cost is $29 for members. Use course ID: NRA S10 004 when registering.

To register for any class or to become a RAP member (using course ID: NRA C01 001), contact the MCC Registration Office at (815) 455-8588.  For more information, contact Dori Sullens at (815) 455-8559.
