Friends of MCC Foundation Awarded $30,000 Grant for Adult Education Programming

[Wednesday, February 19, 2014]

The Friends of McHenry County College (MCC) Foundation recently received a $30,000 grant through Chicago Tribune Charities, a McCormick Foundation Fund, to benefit the MCC Adult Education Department.

Through this funding, MCC will enhance adult education services by purchasing 20 laptop computers and a wireless cart for a mobile computer lab. Additional software will allow students to build career readiness skills, explore career interests, and practice resume writing. This is the second time the college received this grant. The College awarded the same amount in 2011 for increasing adult education outreach services in Harvard.

Tom Pierce, Ph.D., executive director of Adult Education, and his staff members, Marie Day and Sherry May, worked on the proposal.

"We are extremely pleased to receive this grant," Pierce said. "It will support efforts in the Adult Education program to help students build career readiness skills and computer literacy."

McHenry County College's Office of Adult Education serves adults who have not completed high school or who cannot read or speak English. In FY14, MCC's Adult Education programs served more than 1,000 students. Classes are offered year-round in English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education (ABE)/reading, and General Education Development (GED) preparation.

For more information about MCC's ESL or GED programs or information about becoming a literacy volunteer, visit the websites at or or or call the Adult Education office at (815) 455-8752.
