Professional Pharmacy Technician Training Begins Feb. 5 in McHenry

[Friday, January 31, 2014]

McHenry County College is offering  Professional Pharmacy Technician Training from 5:30 to 9 p.m. from Feb. 5 through July 16 in Room 121 at the Shah Center in McHenry, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane in McHenry.

McHenry County College has launched this program that aims to quell the recent shortage of pharmacy technicians, while giving future pharmacists a taste of the health profession. Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists by filling, packaging and distributing medications, and maintaining patient records and inventory. Starting earnings for technicians might be about $10 to $13 an hour, but certified technicians may earn 20 to 30 percent more. Retail chain pharmacies, hospitals, and home health care pharmacies are typical employers.

The Professional Pharmacy Technician Training is a 105-hour course designed to teach students the fundamentals of becoming a pharmacy technician. The program is geared toward a variety of students, including those interested in becoming pharmacy technicians, pre-pharmacy students, or those with a healthcare background looking to strengthen their current skills. This class introduces students to various pharmacy practice settings; it covers drug classes, basic physiology, drug interactions and daily pharmacy operations. Individuals are trained to effectively assist in pharmaceutical preparations and complete daily required tasks in any pharmacy environment. This program will prepare students to take a national certification exam.

Health care workers wanting to enhance their knowledge of prescription drugs and future pharmacists also can benefit from the program, which includes training in pharmacy math, generics, pharmacy law and interpreting prescriptions.

Books and materials are included in the $1,299 fee for this course. For more information, contact Ruth Kormanak at (815) 479-7879 or rkormanak@mchenry.edu.  To register, call (815) 455-8588 and use course ID: QHC C03-002.
