Roselia Banuelos – What’s She Doing Now?

Roselia signing up voter

McHenry County College alum Roselia Banuelos of McHenry registers MCC student Shane Latham of Harvard while at the Crystal Lake campus to talk to students about the importance of registering to vote. As an intern for the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI), she has a quota to collect 1,000 new registered voters by August 10. She estimates she collected about 300 so far.

Banuelos, who graduated from MCC May 12 with an associate in arts degree with high honors, received the 10-week paid internship based on her previous leadership roles at MCC and her strong work ethic. She served a one-year term as Student Senate president and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She will attend the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

“It’s hard work but, it’s fun,” Banuelos said. “It takes a lot of organization and follow-through.” When she encounters some people who are hesitant to register, she explains to them the USHLI slogan, “Your vote is your voice.”
