Another Important Election Day

Hello, This is Iris Bryan with another moment in the history of McHenry County College.

On April first, nineteen sixty-seven, voters approved the formation of Junior College District 528. It was not easy obtaining a required majority vote in both incorporated and unincorporated areas of the seven McHenry County high school districts.

Sixty-four percent of incorporated area voters approved the referendum with thirty-six percent voting against it.

Compare that with the fifty-eight percent ‘yes’ and forty-two percent ‘no’ votes in the unincorporated area.

Most of the opposition came from voters in the Harvard and Hebron areas.

The Junior College Association for McHenry County Area celebrated the winning outcome at a victory dinner. At this time, the Association was disbanded in favor of the already formed McHenry County Educational Foundation.

The next step was a May 27 election to determine the seven-member Board of Trustees who would oversee the establishment of the college. Twenty-one candidates filed the necessary petitions. More on MCC’s first trustees in the next audiocast.

Celebrate these historic events! Join in this year’s festive celebrations beginning Sunday, April 15, followed by more events in July and September.
