Hello, this is Iris Bryan with another moment in the history of McHenry County College.
Although voters in nineteen sixty three soundly defeated a proposal for a community college in McHenry County, a group of dedicated citizens decided to make their efforts work in a second attempt.
In 1966, a group of citizens worked through many months of meetings, speeches, explanations, hours of planning, and begging for funds. No one lost confidence that McHenry County would soon have a state required Class I Junior College—that is a district operated by its own board of trustees rather than sharing a board with an elementary or grade school district.
There were, of course, opponents to the idea. But this merely kept the citizens who were promoting the issue on their toes and dedicated. The tide was about to turn in their favor.
The tangible result of all this work exists on Route 14 north of Crystal Lake. Other, perhaps more important, results are the many individuals who have attended, worked for and used the College over the years.
Join us on Sunday April 15th for a kick-off open house commemorating 40 years of a first class educational facility.
