What Happened with the 1963 Referendum?

Greetings, this is Iris Bryan with another moment in the history of McHenry County College!

Creating a community college district wasn’t at all easy. Two attempts were needed to win voter approval.

The first try in 1963 failed when 75% of the voters opposed the community college district formation.

Exerting its power was an influential political group, which felt the proposed college’s funding was more than McHenry County taxpayers could afford.

The college lost that round, but the amount of information made available to the community helped to educate voters for a second attempt four years later.

This is Iris Bryan, the voice of McHenry County College history.
I’ll have another audio moment for you soon.
