Hello, this is Iris Bryan with another moment in the history of McHenry County College.
While the junior college board attempted to find a suitable office location, Illinois Institute of Technology offered space in a building the organization recently acquired. It was the former Pure Oil Research Laboratory in Crystal Lake.
Initial board concerns were that the identity of the college would be diminished by the larger institution. However, the college would be allowed signs for the two entrances.
Once the board felt comfortable with this idea, it began negotiations, resulting in the lease of 1,500 square feet for $3,750 annually. This included janitor services, watchman, air conditioning, and plenty of parking.
This prompted the need for an official name for the college. Suggestions had come from the public but a name could not be agreed upon, so a contest was held to name the college. The winner would receive a $150 one-term scholarship.
