Hello, this is Iris Bryan with another moment in the history of McHenry County College.
The newly formed junior college board did not have a place they could call home. They were meeting in the offices of the County Superintendent of Schools. Four office facilities were offered to the board. They had to consider needs of space, cost and parking.
One location was found that suited all needs and they began preparing to move. However, it was located in a residential area and required rezoning. This was denied, and the board was forced to reconsider other options.
On a brighter note, the promised state funding for the first year of operation was received and placed in a bank fund.
A questionnaire was sent to area companies and their employees to determine vocational course needs.
Selecting a college president, one of the most important decisions of the board, began with identifying the qualifications a president should hold. The board expressed an adamant view that the President should be on board before deciding the courses, or the location of the college.
Be sure to return here for further developments of what is now a landmark in McHenry County, McHenry County College.
This year, we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the formation of McHenry County College. Post your college memories online and in our electronic time capsule, and join us in September for an open house. Details will be posted at www.mchenry.edu.
