Hello, this is Iris Bryan with another moment in the history of McHenry County College.
Once a board of trustees for the new junior college district organized, the trustees began considering the necessary elements required to operate the district. Many tasks awaited their considerations. These included providing for legal and financial assistance, finding office space and furniture, and considering sites for both a temporary and a permanent campus.
A few trustees wanted to begin adult and vocational education classes in the fall of 1967, while others felt it was too soon to consider this and wanted to work on hiring a college president first.
Trustees did offer to pay tuition for district residents wishing to attend summer or fall classes at any public junior college in the state. They also reached out to Lake County high school district residents if they desired to annex to the newly formed college district. At the time, Lake County did not have a junior college district, but was in the process of forming one.
Some disagreement among the board members arose, indicating their passions for the fledgling district. Many times the disagreement turned to full support for an issue resulting in a benefit for the district.
This year, we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the formation of McHenry County College. Post your college memories online and in our electronic time capsule, and join us in September for an open house. Details will be posted at www.mchenry.edu.
