• "The purpose of the policy is to serve as a guide to the library staff and McHenry County College personnel for achieving consistent excellence in the choice of materials, and as a statement to the public of our purposes and standards in building collections."

• Provide materials of high quality that enrich and support the curriculum, taking into consideration to varied interests, abilities, and maturity levels of the student body, and the needs of all faculty of the college community.

• Provide materials that stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation, aesthetic value, and ethical standards.

• Provide materials which are representative of our diverse culture and society in order to enhance an appreciation for ones own heritage.

• Place principle above personal opinion, and reason above prejudice in order to assure a comprehensive collection of high quality materials in all forms.

• Insure that the needs of all segments of the college community are being met by establishing a cooperative approach to selection.
