Fall Faculty Workshops on August 20thSubmitted By profdev@mchenry.edu 8/7/2009 12:46:07 PM Phone: 815-479-7768 Fall Faculty Workshops are on Thursday, August 20th. While this day is primarily a Professional Development time for our faculty members, we encourage all employees to participate in two important events: • Dr. Larry Tyree, our new Interim President, and Dr. Tony Miksa, our new Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, will present our opening session on “Who’s New at MCC” in the Conference Center from 11:00-11:30am. • Our traditional “kick-off to the new semester” lunch will be served from 11:30-12:15pm in the cafeteria. We know that not everyone can leave their work areas to come to these events, but ask that departments do what they can to allow as many as possible to attend while still providing needed coverage. Please check out the attached schedule for the day. The Emergency Response Drill in the afternoon is geared specifically for our faculty members. We will have safety training events for all employees on Professional Development Day in October. All full time faculty will be participating in the afternoon and evening activities. Adjunct faculty members are invited to attend in the afternoon, if possible, and are strongly encouraged to come to the evening meetings.

Get on Board with MCC Employee Shuttle ProgramSubmitted By chaggerty@mchenry.edu 8/18/2009 9:40:56 PM Phone: We are anticipating record enrollment this Fall. We are also anticipating that our parking lots will be near capacity, especially during daytime hours on Mondays-Thursdays. To make parking more convenient for you and our students, we have partnered with the Crystal Lake Park District to create an MCC Employee Shuttle program. Beginning August 24, the shuttle will be available for all employees who: 1) work full-time, 2) start work between 7:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m., and 3) typically leave MCC between 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. How does it work? Several MCC shuttles will run continuous loops Monday-Thursday between Lippold Park and MCC. Shuttle pick-up and drop-off locations are: MCC Entrance near the flagpoles and Raiders Football Parking Lot in Lippold Park. The shuttles will run during the following hours on Monday-Thursday: 7:15-8:30 a.m. and 4-5:15 p.m. Shuttles will provide door-to-door service, picking-up and dropping-off employees at the Raiders Parking Lot in Lippold Park and at the College entrance by the flagpoles. There will be signs at Lippold Park to direct you to the proper parking lot. If you would need to return to your vehicle during the day due to an emergency, Campus Safety will arrange for transportation for you back to Lippold Park. Why should you participate? For every day that you participate in the employee shuttle program, you will be given a Shuttle Buck, a $1.00 coupon for the MCC Cafeteria. And, for every day that you ride the shuttle, your name will be entered into a drawing for one of five $50 American Express gift certificates. In addition, the parking lot at Lippold Park will be substantially less busy than the MCC parking lots. Enjoy a stress-free, door-to-door shuttle service that will provide greater flexibility to our students. We will re-evaluate the demand for on-campus parking on a weekly basis to determine when we will be able to discontinue the Employee Shuttle Program. Questions? Contact Kathy Plinske at kplinske@mchenry.edu. Large Events on CampusSubmitted By acarzoli@mchenry.edu 8/11/2009 10:15:34 AM Phone: August 12th, we will be hosting the Hearthstone Senior Fair. Also this week, we will have 325 SEDOM employees on campus Thursday for their in-service staff development program in the gym. They will be eating lunch in the cafeteria between 11:30am and 1pm. There is a regular PACE Bus Route that has pick-up/drop-off locations at MCC and at the Crystal Lake, Woodstock and Harvard train stations. Please visit http://www.pacebus.com/sub/schedules/route_detail.asp?RouteNo=808 for more details. If you still plan to park on campus, here are a few things to remember. A police officer will be posted at each of the College entrances, directing traffic to a specific parking lot. Vehicles will likely not be allowed to drive around Ring Road – for example, if you enter via Lucas Road, you may be directed to park in Lot A, without the option to drive to other lots on campus. Security officers will also be stationed in each of our parking lots to monitor the number of spaces available, and help direct traffic to open spaces. Please plan to arrive early as you may not be able to park in the lot closest to the building in which you work. Thank you for your continued cooperation!
Something New Around CampusSubmitted By chaggerty@mchenry.edu 8/21/2009 5:16:55 PM Phone: Amidst the preparations for the beginning of fall semester, perhaps you noticed something new while walking through the hallways of MCC. Yes--digital signage is here! Last week, MCC launched digital signage messaging around campus. In total, there are 11 flat-panel LCD screens and 24 LED screens with scrolling information. LCD screens will display event information, including Student Life activities, MCC Scots game info and other key reminders for students (such as registration deadlines and Financial Aid reminders). LED screens will scroll date/time information, as well as provide directions to buildings, classrooms, etc. Both sets of screens are integrated with the College's Emergency Response Plan and would display emergency information if/when needed. So, be sure to check them out--and remind students to use them as well. New/Revised Process for Name Badge RequestsSubmitted By chaggerty@mchenry.edu 8/4/2009 9:51:10 AM Phone: 8727 HR and OMPR have updated the process for name badge requests. Here is the new process- please take note: Each month on the Monday after the Board Meeting, HR will provide a list of all new/promoted employees and their official title(s) to OMPR via spreadsheet. This information is taken directly from the board report for accuracy and timeliness. If necessary, OMPR will create a temporary name badge for all on that list so that new employees have a badge quickly, and in many cases, even before they begin their first day at MCC. -New employees will have an opportunity to request a different name only (not title) to be used on their permanent badge. They will have 30 days from their start date to email the OMPR marketing assistant (jlefevre@mchenry.edu) with this request. If they do not, a permanent badge will be developed with the name we have on file per the board report. -If you have hired classified or part-time staff/adjunct faculty and need a badge, please email the OMPR marketing assistant (jlefevre@mchenry.edu) with the employee's correct name and title, as well as their start date. We will add these names to the monthly spreadsheet. -If you are an existing employee and lose/misplace your badge, please submit a project request to OMPR for a new badge. This project request document is attached and also can be found on InsideMCC. We are working with IT on an even more streamlined process and will update you again when that takes effect. In the meantime, please follow the above process, and contact me (chaggerty@mchenry.edu) with any questions. Thanks for your attention! Back to topResponding to Media InquiriesSubmitted By chaggerty@mchenry.edu 8/25/2009 2:50:00 PM Phone: If you are contacted by the media requesting information pertaining to the College, here are some helpful reminders: 1) Get the reporter's name, paper and contact information--as well as information reporter is requesting. 2) Contact the Director of Marketing and Public Relations promptly for notification of inquiry. 3) The Director of Marketing and Public Relations will counsel faculty/staff member on whether they can handle directly or the Office of Marketing and Public Relations will manage. Some Additional Suggestions: -When answering questions from the press, you should always be fair and factual. Remember, you are the voice of the College. -If asked questions outside of your expertise, refer to the Director of Marketing and Public Relations. -In some instances when faculty/staff are able to talk to press directly, the Director of Marketing and Public Relations or a member of the OMPR media team may wish to be present during that discussion. Please remember that it is the responsibility of all MCC faculty and staff to continually practice procedures and behaviors that will gain respect of the press--and the community. This includes speaking positively about related programs and events on behalf of the College. Even if you are in line at the grocery store or picking up dry cleaning, you are a representative of the College. So, what can you say if someone contacts you right now? Here are a few basic talking points to help you along: 1) MCC has a record enrollment of credit students for fall, both traditional and adult students. 2) All faculty and staff are making additional efforts to be available for these students if they have questions, need help locating classrooms or simply need to find the restrooms, cafeteria or library. 3) Everyone at the College is excited about the start of the fall semester and welcoming our students back. What a bargain, and I would love to fill the house on Thursday, October 8th with lots of amazing MCC colleagues supporting the cause. Please contact me for your tickets now! Patti Vasquez is a Chicago native who treads through life with the spectre of mixed Irish and Latino parentage hanging constantly over her. She takes a wry look at work, family, and society. She appeared as a Fresh Mug at the Chicago Comedy Festival in '98, and appeared in '99 in the Sophomore showcase. Her TV appearances include NBC's Friday Night, and ABC News-Chicago's special Nuevo Millenium. PATTI VASQUEZ, who is an outspoken advocate for breast cancer research, has created a clever and tongue-in-cheek campaign to get men more involved and interested in breast cancer research and events. She hilariously explains why she wears a pink ribbon during her performance and shares her ideas and slogans for the new movement during her show. Never at a loss for words, PATTI VASQUEZ relates intimate moments from her life and relationships. She involves the audience as she shares her stories and opinions. Better Than A BoomboxSubmitted By plauer@mchenry.edu 8/24/2009 9:56:31 AM Phone: 8582 Aiwa LCX-70M compact "bookcase" stereo receiver. Note: only the radio receiver works! BUT, it offers great sound if you're looking for something better than a boom box for a dorm room, workshop, etc. I broke the tape deck (d'oh!), and the CD player crapped out recently and cannot be fixed (seriously, don't even try). However, this little system really does sound good and has lots of nice features on the synthesizer tuner, including a daily event/sleep timer, LOTS of station presets, 3 equalizer modes, adjustable BBE settings for high-frequency clarity, and adjustable T-bass settings, which gives very nice sound out of compact speakers. So, ya know, it's way better than, say a clock radio. Comes with AM loop antenna, FM antenna, full-function remote, and manual/instruction book. 25 watts per channel (87.5 to 108 MHz on FM, 531/530 to 1602/1710 kHz on AM). Power output is RMS at 6 ohms, from 65 Hz to 15 kHz, with no more than 1% total harmonic distortion (I have no idea what that means, but I thought it sounded impressive). Values for one speaker are as follows: 2-way, bass reflex (magnetism sealed), 100 mm cone, 50 mm cone, 6 ohms. Output sound pressure level 87 dB/W/m. $35/best offer/or cool trade.

Back to topSeeking evening rides for gas moneySubmitted By kstraw@mchenry.edu 8/25/2009 6:52:56 PM Phone: I'm seeking a ride from someone who leaves MCC between 6:30-7:40 on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. I do not have a car (I do this on purpose to help the parking problem, ha ha), so I take the Metra home to Chicago. The Dial-a-ride stops picking up at 6, but my last class ends at 6:20. The next train isn't until 8, so if you can drop me off at the Crystal Lake Metra station at some point between those two times it would be perfect. My previous plan fell through and I am currently taking a cab to get to the station--a viable but expensive solution. I would be happy to chip in some gas money as part of our arrangement.
